Family night at the Drive-in
by Penny E. Ross
(from "Once Upon a Time...along my way" - 2025)
Mom and Dad surprised me and my brothers and sisters at breakfast one Saturday. They told us they were going to take us to a drive-in movie theatre! Sheryl and I smiled at each other because we’d enjoyed the last time we went. The movie was going to be Old Yeller. It was supposed to be a great show, but with a sad ending. We spent all day Sunday talking about it.
Earl and Sandra were playing catch in the backyard. Judy was only three years old and was with Mom in the house. Dad was at work, as usual. Sheryl and I were busy taking the clothes off the line while Kenneth put the clothes in the basket and carried them into the house for Mom to iron. We were expected to finish this job before it rained.
It was warm—typical for this time of year in Saskatchewan. And it didn’t get dark until late in the day. We finished supper and did the dishes just like we did every day. Mom popped a huge bowl of buttered, salty popcorn for the movie and put it into small bags—one for each of us. Dad was busy putting some blankets and pillows in the trunk.
Once we arrived at the theatre, Dad paid one dollar for our car and we drove in. He always picked the same area to park his car—in the middle of the grounds about eight rows back. Then he reached out, grabbed the speaker, and hooked it onto his window. He told us one night a person drove away and forgot to put the speaker back, so it stayed hooked to the window.
Sheryl, Kenneth, Sandra, and I got some blankets out of the trunk and spread them out on the gravel in front of the car. Mom gave us the popcorn she’d made. Earl crawled into the back seat, and Judy sat on Mom’s lap, unsuccessfully trying to fall asleep. Dad got a large bag of popcorn out of the trunk.
Lively music blared about the snack foods available at the concession stand—hot dogs with onions, mustard and ketchup for only fifty cents, hot, salty popcorn for fifty cents and a sparkling Coke for a quarter a bottle. Dad brought a bottle opener when we were ready to drink. Once the advertisements were over, the show began.
Old Yeller was a large yellow, brownish, long-haired dog. After the movie, we played for a while; there was an intermission, so we all got out and stretched. Some folks got out of their cars and headed for the concession. There were long line-ups that became short very quickly. People bought hot dogs wrapped in shiny paper, soft drinks, candy bars and hot chocolate. A big favourite is the small cardboard dish with hot, salty French fries.
There was a small place in front of the big movie screen with swings, teeter-totters, and a slide. Kids would play as long as they could until the movie was starting. Once the movie started again, everyone headed back to their cars. Dad brought us some surprise treats from home—chips in small paper. Some of us ate outside the car, and we munched on our popcorn, swatting away the never-ending swarms of mosquitoes. When the show ended, we gathered up all our blankets and pillows and jumped into the back seat.
On the way home, Earl slept in the back window, cuddling his truck and any other toy he was able to bring. Sheryl, Kenneth, Sandra and I leaned on each other in the back seat, sleeping all the way home. When we got there, Dad carried Earl and Judy into their beds while the rest of us talked about the movie. Later, I drifted off to sleep, dreaming about our next trip to the drive-in.

Excerpt of the Month:

Excerpt of the Month:

We aim to support writers in the craft and business of writing, exploring all avenues of the writing process, publishing and storytelling, while building a strong literary community, and to bring local writers - Alberta and Canada - to the attention of book lovers.”
Because Filidh Publishing is always looking to bring our authors to new audiences, we’re also planning to have vendor’s booths at:
· The Spring Fling Book Fair
· The Buccaneer Days Marketplace
· The Victoria Pride Festival and Pride and The Word. https://victoriapridesociety.org/pride-2024/literary/
We’d like to take our show on the road, as it were, and visit other festivals across Canada this year. If you know of an event that we could participate in, please email info@filidhbooks.com
In other news, we are still looking to host a Writers Retreat, and are looking for facilities, (hotels or resorts) where we could host a weekend of workshops and writing time for about twenty participants. If you have any ideas or know of possible hosting facilities, please let us know as above with VENUE in the subject line.
Likewise, if you know of a location for an Open Mic evening, a school, seniors’ residence or other opportunity for authors to read their work, discuss writing or otherwise share their work, please advise as above.
